A Reflection... JVA's Jumbo Electric Fence Energiser

One of JVA's biggest achievements this year was the release of the worlds's largest IP Electric Fence Energiser.
On the 16th August, JVA announced the release of the Jumbo range, consisting of three models (JMB-ZM1, JMB-ZM2 and JMB-ZM50) at Goondiwindi's Sheep Technology field day. Since then, we have had a great deal of interest surrounding the JMB-ZM2, which is currently available as part of our Electric Fence Station. We look forward to what 2020 brings!

Now, with the help of JVA's Perimeter Patrol Multi-Zone System and multiple JVA ZM18 and ZLM4 Energisers, the boundary of the university remains secure and protected.

JVA Fault Finder Tip # 4. Using your Fault Finder

Take the first fence reading at least 30cm from the energiser. Measuring the voltage of an energiser at the energiser terminals may give misleading readings. Holding the JVA Fault Finder near an energiser will usually give a large current (Amps) reading due to the magnetic field from the energiser transformer. The JVA Fault Finder has a very sensitive magnetic field pickup which will be swamped by the large field from the energiser transformer. This effect can extend to about 30cm from the energiser.

JVA Fault Finder Tip # 3. Multiple Faults.

To find multiple faults on the electric fence, use these rules: 1. Start close to the energiser, where the lead out connects to the live wires and work away. 2. Always follow the wire showing the highest current (Amps) reading. 3. After following this through and finding the fault go back to the lead out wire (or first intersection). Then follow the next highest current reading. Repeat as necessary.

JVA Fault Finder Tip # 2. Know your electric fence.

Every electric fence is different, influenced by a range of variables including the type of wire and insulators used and the length of the fence. Even the same fence can change from day to day with changes in weather and vegetation. Not every electric fence is perfect. So it is good to know what is ‘typical’ or ‘normal’ for your fence. Take the JVA Fault Finder and take regular measurements (readings) to learn what is ‘normal’ voltage and current on your fence. This will allow you to know the acceptable voltage required to keep your livestock in and when it is time to fix the fence

JVA Fault Finder Tip # 1. The difference between Voltage and Current.

Electricity can be compared to water: To move water along pipes we need to push it with a pump which creates pressure. To move electrical current (Amps) along a wire we need to push it with an energiser to produce electrical pressure (Volts). If you had a large leak in a water pipe there would be a flow of water from the pump which produces the pressure to the leak. A short circuit in an electric fence is like a water leak. By following the current (Amps) flow the JVA Fault Finder will lead directly to the fault

I find the little smart bobbin is great because it means an extra or new insulator can be put into an existing electric fence, our main boundary fence is electrified with a single steel wire standing off the main old wire fence.As our main fences are all very old we go through from time to time replacing posts and straining wires, we can slip one of these smart bobbins onto the electric wire, put a cut piece of 10 gauge wire around the bobbin and fasten to an upper and lower wire on the existing fence making a perfect new stand-off insulator. They can of course also be used when making a complete new fence or when running a new wire, the bobbin and it’s mounting wire can be pre assembled, fitted to the fence and the new electric wire run through it as with the expensive porcelain stand-off insulators, or the new wire can be put in place strained up and the smart bobbin clipped onto the wire and fitted up the same as described above to an old existing fence.

80 Electric Fence Specialists and JVA delegates gathered from across the globe to meet in South Africa for the inaugural JVA International Conference.
The conference was a huge success, with 3 days of presentations interspersed with wonderful evening entertainment from local school children, game park drives and quad bike tours.

JVA is happy to announce the release of the SMS Gateway for Control and Monitoring of Z-Series Energisers and Monitors through mobile phone via SMS.

Storing up to 9 mobile phone numbers, it will alert you when an alarm occurs on the Electric Fence, alternatively you can use SMS to check on the status of your fence and send commands to the energiser.

The SMS Gateway can monitor and control up to 15 devices (via keypad bus), as well as two dry contact inputs and two 30Vdc 8A relays.

Have you ever installed an Electric Fence and found that you have Voltage on the Earth and thought "that cannot be right!"

We recently got a call from someone who thought that their Electric Fence Energiser must be faulty because it has a high Voltage on the Earth terminal. As a matter of fact, this is never the Energisers fault.

A high Voltage on the Electric Fence Energisers Earth is caused by two things - an insufficient earthing system combined with a bad short on the fence.

There are two steps to overcome this problem. 1) Improve your Earth by adding more earth rods. 2) Find and fix the short. We can help with the later: use a Fault Finder it will lead you directly to the short.

JVA's Brazilian Distributor has just released a comprehensive video of JVA's Security possibilities.

Although it is not in English we think it is a great example of how JVA's Security Electric Fence Energisers and Perimeter Patrol Software can be implemented to secure any site.

The Security Keypad comes equipped with a wall tamper switch that you can wire into your Energiser's Gate Input (only if you are not using it for a Gate or for switching the Power Level). When the keypad is fitted to the wall, a small screw in the wall is enough to press this switch down. This means that when the Keypad comes off the wall, the switch will be opened and the Energiser will identify this change.

Finally, you must use your Keypad to configure the Energiser in order to detect this change. Ensure that the Gate Input is configured for the Gate Function (Programming Option 12) and set the Gate Delay (Option 13) to zero. When this is completed, the Energiser will immediately indicate a Gate Alarm if the Keypad is knocked off the wall. Simple really.

The best way to understand Current, Energy, Power and Voltage is to think of it as a hose full of water.

Your Voltage is the pressure coming from the tap - when you turn the tap on more, there is a greater pressure in the hose and more voltage.

The amount of water coming out of the tap is the flow of Current. The more water coming through the hose - the more current there is. So, if there is a leak in the system (fault) then the current flow increases, reducing the pressure (Voltage)

Energy (Joules) is the strength of the pulse that puts the voltage and current on the fence. A garden pump increases the force over a standard drip feed. Thus a higher stored energy can deliver more power to the fence.

Finally, Power is the amount of Energy used per second.

The JVA Fault Finder only requires one touch of the live wire to provide Voltage and Current. The peak voltage will be displayed on the left of the screen in kilo volts and the current will be displayed on the right.

Simply, the Fault Finder does not require a connection to earth or two pulses on the fence to give a reading - simply press the Power (PRESS) button and touch the metal connection at the front of the Fault Finder onto the fence then check the readings. Should there be a current flow (fault) on the fence then a Fault Direction Arrow will light and show the direction (either left or right) to the fault.

Many farmers struggle with the tough task of monitoring and maintaining cattle, sheep and other live stock. Not only do farmers have the responsibility of keeping thousand of animals well fed and watered, protection from feral predators is vital. Researchers believe feral animals, (especially dingoes) are increasing across almost all rangeland sheep production areas, and are therefore one of the most prodigious threats to animals for rangeland farmers.

Think of your fence as a pipe full of water (voltage) - the longer the pipe is; the more water required to fill it. When scrub or grass touches the fence it is like a leak and the current flows out, reducing the pressure and dropping the voltage. Fence design can have the same effect and even a perfect fence will reduce the Voltage.

An effective fence voltage is above 3.5kV. To maintain this the fence could be perfect and long or pretty beat up and short.

What are "Joules" and how do they help when choosing an Electric Fence Energiser? Named after James Prescott Joule (1818-1889), a joule (J) is a measure of electrical energy. In short, it is the strength of the pulse that puts the voltage and current onto your electric fence.

When looking at Electric Fence Energisers it is helpful to compare their Output Joules, though some companies will only quote Stored Joules, so what is the difference? Stored joules is the amount of electrical charge held in the main capacitor before an electric pulse is discharged. This discharge or energy actually transferred to the fence is called the Output Joules. Since not all the energy makes it to the fence terminals (some is lost as heat) generally each 1J of stored energy will provide approximately 0.75J of output energy. So for a fair comparison between a Stored to Output J figure, reduce the Stored figure by multiplying by 3/4.

Some energiser manufacturers make ridiculous claims about amount of fence in km that their energisers can power. Always check the Joules, it is a far better method of comparison.

Since the invention of the directional electric fence fault finder finding faults has been a lot easier. Instead of switching sections of fence off until the kick returns, graziers can use a Fault Finder to lead them to the fault with its clever direction arrows. The next step is, of course, to fix the problem and get on with the next job.

To turn off the fence use a 'short-out lead' to short out the live wire by attaching it up stream (feed or energiser side) of the point you wish to work on. Simple find a good earth, a steel dropper will do, and connect the jumper lead from the live wire to the earth. This will short it out and keep it 'cold' while you fix the problem. Be careful if you are using rusty metal as an earth - wait for any sparking to subside before touching the fence. If you have more than one live wire then you will need a couple of leads.

From October 2013 I have been working on a wireless and ZM20 project at Timbavati Game reserve.
This project encompasses game fencing as per attached map and monitoring the fences using our ZM20 monitor and IP cameras at strategic points.
Because of the distances, really bad cell phone signal and terrain challenges we decided to uses Wi-Fi communication and have installed five 12m towers on which we have installed our Wi-Fi equipment and IP cameras .

There are a total of seven ZM20 monitors connected to existing energisers. Each of the 7 fences are from 3km to 5,5km in length and consist of 6 and 7 live wires using a combination of triple, double and single offset brackets.

To sectorise these fences might sound easy but keep in mind that we are travelling in a game park where your average speed is 30km/hr! In addition you have terrain that needs a 4x2 or 4x4 vehicle. So to sectorise one section might take half a day because of travelling to the end of the fence for the midpoint then returning to setup sectors 1 onwards. Throw in travelling time to each station then a whole day is gone. We also have animal road blocks like elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, lion, etc that demands stoppage time and the weather plays its part too, as one part of the park may be bone dry but another part maybe drenched with heavy rain. With the rains the terrain can change drastically where even the best 4x4 vehicle gets stuck - you cannot put a time to your activities and plan ahead. You have to go out and hope that you get as much accomplished as the weather and the animals dictate.

Wi-Fi Communications
To setup the Wi-Fi equipment we take GPS coordinates of each station and plot them on a Garmin map source program that has a plug-in to Google earth.
We then look at the elevation profiles between all the stations to ascertain where the best locations for our towers and repeaters are - elevation profiles help us to see potential land obstacles and also work out differences in height between stations which then gives us an idea of how to position Wi-Fi equipment. We also have to make provision for trees.

At the wardens headquarters there are 3 more client PC’s with Perimeter Patrol that connect to the wardens PC which serves as the HLI server. Here one of the Wi-Fi masts is also located: giving us a point to point link between the repeater station and HQ that will serve as a data link or backhaul for the energiser and camera info. The game warden can now sit in his office and view fence voltages and see certain areas of the park. All rangers involved can now monitor the fences and cameras via their PC’s, Smart-phone or Tablet’s. The warden and his team are using the system extremely well and have scheduled maintenance based on the information from the ZM20’s. This also helps the game ranger’s response time as they now can go directly to the affected areas as per Perimeter patrol and reduce the time used patrolling to test if fences are operational. Thus they can now concentrate on the more important task of preventing poaching!

They have come to rely on the information from Perimeter Patrol, and are now looking into using the remote relay functionality of Perimeter Patrol to switch lights on/off and open the gates mentioned above. It is awesome to see how this technology works.

Remember this is all wireless in the bush!!
